By Jennifer Brooks

There are a lot great places to live in North Carolina. It has its share of large, urban areas like Charlotte, and many small communities located throughout the state. People who relocate there for business or as a result of retirement often choose to live in one of the little towns located a short distance from more metropolitan cities. Realtors are always happy to show new residents the Hillsborough NC houses for sale for instance.

Located just west and north of Chapel Hill and Duke University and a little over an hour from Raleigh, this charming community is a thriving town with proud residents who boast about the many advantages of living in Orange County. The town has nature trails perfect for biking, walking, and hiking. The restaurants are excellent and family friendly. There is a local farmer's market and an organic grocery store for the health conscious.

There is improved acreage available for those with an interest in becoming gentleman farmers. A recent property on the market included about twenty-five fenced acres perfect for horses. The main residence has four bedrooms and a living area that includes more than five thousand square feet. The two story brick is designed for entertaining with a wide, open floor plan, gourmet kitchen and large bonus rooms. At less than a million dollars, it is a great possibility for a big family that likes country living with the conveniences of town nearby.

At the other end of the spectrum, there has been a two bedroom bungalow with working fireplace, bead board, and new heat and air available for less than a hundred thousand dollars. The spacious deck is an added amenity. It is not often prospective purchasers find something this attractive and affordable so close to the downtown area.

Some potential purchasers prefer new home packages, and there are a number to choose from in this area. Families looking for a residence with four bedrooms, main floor masters, guest suites, and bonus rooms should plan to pay three hundred thousand dollars and up. Open living floor plans with multiple studies are often available from the builders.

Not everyone's lifestyle is suited to single family home living. Some individuals, especially those without children, prefer condominiums and town homes. In this area there are usually a number of very nice town homes with two bedrooms and a bath for under a hundred fifty thousand dollars. They often have hardwood floors, foyers, patios, and detached garages. Most will offer residents pool and exercise facilities.

Bank owned and government foreclosures are occasionally offered at auction in this part of the state. Interested buyers can often get a great deal at below market value prices. Investors and owner occupants both have an opportunity to bid. Many auctioneers publish minimum bids so participants know what the owners are willing to take. Real estate websites often advertise the auctions.

Small town life in this part of North Carolina offers a lot to the people who choose it. Residents are friendly, and the traffic is minimal. Urban areas are a convenient drive away, and an Atlantic Ocean visit makes a great day trip.
